Webinar: Solar Heaters Arab Mark and Certification Initiative (SHAMCI) - towards a regional certification scheme for solar water heaters
DATE: 30 May 2013
SPEAKERS: Eng. Ashraf Kraidy
MODERATOR: Nigel Cotton
This webinar provided an overview of the first regional solar thermal certification scheme for developing countries. The objective of the SHAMCI is to facilitate the market transformation of SWHs in the Arab region, reduce trade barriers and promote the use of high quality SWHs in the Arab region and beyond.
At the end of 2011, the Arab Ministerial Council for Electricity (AMCE) asked the Regional Center for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (RCREEE) and the Arabian Industrial Development and Mining Organization (AIDMO) to work on a standardization and certification programme for SWHs to ensure a specific quality level for solar thermal products and services in the Arab region.
The RCREEE worked on this request together with the University of Stuttgart in Germany. The final output – the SHAMCI certification programme - is similar to the Solar Keymark in Europe or the Solar Rating and Certification Corporation (SRCC) in the US. It was released at the end of 2012. The model was presented to the executive office of the Electricity Arab Ministerial Council who blessed the creation of the network and supported the implementation of the model throughout the Arab region.
The SHAMCI network is made of 38 members ranging from energy authorities, to industries, certification bodies, test laboratories, inspection bodies, consumer NGOS and other concerned stakeholders.
