Technology Review and Selection of CSP and Desalination Configurations (2009)

This Final Report is the deliverable of Work Package (WP1) from the MED-CSD Project. Designed to assess combined solar power and desalination plants’ technico-economic potential in Mediterranean Partner countries, it was a project funded by the European Commission under the 7th Framework Programme (FP7). It ran between June 2008 and June 2010.

The report is divided into three tasks, based on conclusions drawn from several CSP studies and projects. The first task describes concentrating solar power (CSP) principles and gives an overview on existing technologies. It subsequently outlines recent project developments in Europe and other parts of the world and gives an update on CSP industry and other stakeholders. With a focus on cogeneration of power and sea water desalination, Task 2 offers a detailed analysis of developments in this field of application. Finally, Task 3 summarizes different possibilities of integrating CSP and desalination technologies also giving preliminary recommendations for the MED-CSD process.

Work Package 1 thus provided the needed technology review and an analysis of recent studies and offered the basis upon which the rest of the project could be developed.
