Solar Thermal Space Heating for New Construction Utilizing Thermal Storage (2010)
Submitted by Raquel Ponte Costa on May 30, 2015This whitepaper was researched, written and published by Thermal Storage Solutions, LLC. It provides a cost-benefit analysis of using solar thermal space heating and thermal storage for new construction. The whitepaper argues that the main benefits of solar thermal are reducing energy costs and diminishing the carbon footprint of a system. The paper sets out to provide this by comparing residences with traditional heating systems and ones with solar thermal systems. The primary conclusion of the paper is that the residence with a solar thermal system and a thermal storage system has the lowest operating cost and best overall cost of ownership over a thirty year window. When they ran a similar test on commercial buildings, they again found that the solar thermal system with thermal storage reduced operating costs by nearly 75%.
