This is a presentation made during a Regional Workshop (Solar Thermal Applications in Egypt, Lebanon, Palestinian Territories, Syria and Jordan: Framework Conditions and Private Sector Needs) in Cairo, Egypt in 2009.
The Palestinian Territory has very few energy resources and the use of renewables is still quite limited. Solar and biomass contributes with 19% to the total primary energy supply. In general, electricity is very expensive since most of it is imported from Israel and is heavily taxed. The government has created a national master plan for the development of renewable energy and energy efficiency which is pushing for the further use of renewables.
The presentation includes some slides with case studies in Palestine where solar thermal is used successfully, like in the Jericho Governmental Hospital and the Birzeit University.
Information is given about the manufacturing capabilities of the country, payback periods, legislative framework and existing barriers. The document finalised with recommendations, like the development of incentive programmes, biding legislation, standards and regulations, more testing facilities, just to give a few examples.
