Solar Hot Water Pilot Program Evaluation (2012)
Submitted by Raquel Ponte Costa on May 26, 2015This report comes from The Electric and Gas Program Administrators of Massachusetts. It is an evaluation of the successes of the National Grid’s Solar Hot Water (SHW) Pilot Program in brining solar thermal water heating to low-income residential neighborhoods in Massachusetts.
The researchers evaluated the success of the program through billing analyses, customer surveys, site visits, and engineering reviews. They found that the net gas savings was approximately 512 MMBTU/yr, a significant amount. The researchers also found that there were significant payback periods associated with many of the systems, and that only a few which were well sited and loaded had more moderate payback periods. Moving forward, the report suggests that a few changes such as limiting rebates to participants who have optimal sites for systems.
