Solar Energy for Heating Water in Urban Areas of Egypt (2003)
Submitted by Raquel Ponte Costa on October 30, 2009This document provides an overview of a project financed under UN GEF Small Grants Programme to boost the use of solar thermal water heating in remote areas of Egypt. The project resulted on the installation of 164 water heaters, reaching 3,790 people, in poor villages and neighborhoods surrounding El Menia, a city in Upper Egypt.
Besides installation, the project also included training and education programmes for the community on the installation and maintenance of solar heaters. The use of solar water heaters for household will reduce considerably the use of waste or traditional fuels to heat the water and therefore diminish greenhouse gas emissions in these villages.
This document reviews the implementation of the project, the partners, lessons learned, the obstacles and the benefits for El Menia city.
