This report from 2009 provides an overview of the SOLCO project. Supported by the Intelligent Energy Europe Programme of the European Commission, this project tries to look into ways of removing barriers that hamper the dissemination of solar cooling plants in European Southern regions such as the Canary Islands, Crete, Cyprus and Sicily, where the high solar radiation is ideal for solar cooling implementation. This report goes through the activities, processes, training and awareness raising activities, without forgetting the conclusions and achievements of the SOLCO project in the different regions where it was applied. The project conclusions indicate that solar cooling, using solar thermal energy, is an efficient, intelligent and environmentally friendly option, but currently the market penetration is still too low, due to high up-front costs. Besides that, the report also highlights the lack of specialized people in this area (designers, installers, maintainers).
