Optimum Designs for Solar Water Heating Equipment for the Single Family Home (2010)
Submitted by Raquel Ponte Costa on June 21, 2015This report was written by Francis de Winter of Francis de Winter & Associates, and explains an improved design for solar thermal hot water heating in single family homes. It was presented at the Latin American solar energy trade show, Conferencia Latino Americana de Energía Solar.
The paper argues that design inefficiencies have seriously hindered the deployment of solar water heaters for use in single family housing, because current designs limit heaters to a 65% solar fraction. Instead, the author of the paper argues, 80-90% solar fraction can be achieved by mounting the backup tank above the thermal tank and coupling them with a thermal diode.
