Monitoring and Modeling Hot Water Consumption in Hotels for Solar Thermal Water Heating System Optimization (2011)

This thesis paper was written by Eric Joseph Urban at Appalachian State University. It concerns how to properly model hot water consumption in hotel lodgings in order to accurately optimize solar thermal installations.

The consumption profiles of hot water use in commercial settings and how they impact solar thermal system performance is not well defined, and this is what Mr. Urban set out to explore. He found that the optimal storage size was two times larger than what is usually recommended in residential settings, and that an increasing collector area should mean flow rate decreases.

Surprisingly, he found that there is no predictable or significant correlation between hot water consumption and lodging occupancy.
