Life Cycle Considerations for Solar Energy Technologies (2011)
Submitted by Raquel Ponte Costa on May 24, 2015This document was created and published by Maxwell K. Micali of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). It provides an overview of various life cycle considerations as they apply to the use of solar energy technologies.
According to the presentation, life cycle analysis usually only tackles the “use” phase of a technology, whereas a “cradle-to-grave” approach would be more comprehensive. The presentation makes two policy recommendations to better serve the solar energy industry in regards to the life cycle of technologies. First, a national recycling program for solar energy technology materials should be implemented. Second, education materials for consumers on proper recycling methods for solar energy technologies should be widely distributed and promoted.
