The Lakeland Electric Business Model for Solar Water Heating (2011)

A poll of Lakeland Electric customers demonstrated that there was significant interest from consumers in purchasing water heated by solar thermal from their utility. Lakeland Electric charges no up-front costs or maintenance costs and provides price protection for 20 years. In return, customers must allow the installation of the solar panel which is investor owned and must sign an access agreement. From the company’s experience, they found that the preference when operating utility provide solar thermal water heating is for an undersized system, as it then avoids surplus energy production favors slight daily backup use.
