The History and Development of Barbados’ Solar Hot Water Industry (2012)

Solar thermal water heating in Barbados has its origins in the 1960s, but did not really start to take off until the oil crises of the 1970s. Since then, the solar thermal industry in Barbados has seen steady growth, especially when compared to other countries.
Solar thermal water heating now reaches over 55,000 consumers in the country, who are saving 185,000 barrels of oil each year. Barbados has also turned itself into an exporter of solar thermal products and skills to the Caribbean region.
