Heating your Home with Solar Air (2009)
Submitted by Raquel Ponte Costa on June 21, 2015This bulletin was written by Brian Specht of the Canadian Solar Industries Association (CanSIA). It provides information on solar thermal air heating for residential buildings.
Residential solar thermal air heating works by placing collectors on the south side of a home, which channel heated air into a house’s air distribution system, thereby circulating hot air. According to the bulletin, solar thermal air heating systems cost in the range of $8 to $12 per square foot, on top of the cost of installation. Two myths about solar air heating that the bulletin debunks are that systems are too expensive for most homes, and that they are of poor aesthetics.
