Greenhouse Gas Reduction Initiative of the Month: Town of Okotoks (2012)
Submitted by Raquel Ponte Costa on May 30, 2015This report was created and published by the Partners for Climate Protection (PCP). It highlights an important and successful greenhouse gas reduction project from the town of Okotoks, the Drake Landing Solar Community.
In 1998, the town of Okotos, Canada adopted a sustainable community plan. Almost over a decade later they were able to accomplish their key initiative, the Drake Landing solar-powered community district heating system. Each individual home in the community derives around 90 per cent of its space heating and 60 per cent of its domestic water from the solar thermal system. The system has received many good reviews from the residents, as reported in the document, who value both the money saved in energy costs and the smaller carbon footprint that comes with living in the community.
