Evaluating the Potential of Solar Thermal and Photovoltaic Energy in Compliance with the Technical Building Code (2011)

The study published by the Spanish Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE) presents an in-depth analysis of the solar thermal energy potential for domestic hot water and swimming pool water heating, as well as the benefits of the solar photovoltaic energy feeding into the grid. A key reference for the study has been the text of the Spanish Technical Building Code (CTE) in force.

The study comprises an extensive analysis of the current and future developments of the Spanish building stock and the use of solar thermal and photovoltaic technologies for this sector. Researchers have not only analysed all building categories, but have also created a simulation programme for their future thermal and electrical demands depending on the geographical positioning within each Spanish region. Consequently, the results and conclusions of this study can be integrated into a Geographic Information System (GIS).

In addition to the geographical modelling, the study also provides an outlook for the technological developments and commercial environment of the aforementioned solar technologies.
