Eastern Oregon Sunshine Pays Off for Correctional Institution (2012)
Submitted by Raquel Ponte Costa on June 21, 2015This case study was created by the Oregon Department of Energy. It looks at the case of the Eastern Oregon Correctional Institution and how they are saving money on their energy bills with a solar thermal system that was installed partially with money from the stimulus.
Before the installation of the solar thermal system, the correctional facility had been using 110 million gallons of water annually or 60,000 gallons of water a day with a 25 year old hot water heater system. The facility ended up using $450,000 from the Oregon Department of Energy to install 12 solar thermal panels, a new storage tank, new piping, and a new heater. The facility is now spending $72,817 less on annual heating costs than they were previously.
