DIY Serpentine Solar Water Heating (2009)

This design manual was created by the Appropriate Infrastructure Development Group, which focuses on fostering sustainable growth in developing countries. This specific project is the serpentine solar water heating system.

The serpentine solar water heating system design uses the thermo-siphon and direct heat exchange properties of solar thermal to allow DIY manual installations for households in developing countries. The test cases that this design manual draws on took place in Xela, Guatemala. The test performances were found to be satisfactory, and the manual includes system sizing estimates. The group hopes to be able to improve the efficiency of their design in the future.
