This technical paper comes from Jay Burch and Lee Magnuson of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. It is an analysis of the efficiency of thermal storage in solar thermal water heating systems being used in residential settings.
The researchers found that temperature gains are evident during the day and there is a loss at night, as was expected. What is interesting to note is how their diagnostics tests can be used to relay information to consumers on the efficiency of their home system, and when it is in need of repair. The authors conclude that more research is needed, but that there is potentially a signal temperature that would broadcast inefficiencies of needed repairs in the system.
