This fact sheet was created and published by Colorado State University. It provides information on how solar thermal water heating systems for domestic use operate and what the benefits of these systems are.
Colorado is in a prime location for solar thermal water heating, as it receives sunshine over 300 days per year. The fact sheet posits as a general rule of thumb that a typical family will need 10 to 18 sq. ft. of collector area per person in the household. The fact sheet uses diagrams to illustrate the layers of a solar collector and how the various parts of an active, closed loop system interact with one another. Systems with low storage volumes in their tank suffer from a lack of efficiency, according to the fact sheet, so it suggests always having extra storage volume.
