Applications of Solar Heat for Temperatures Ranging from 50 – 2000°C (2008)

This paper was presented at the 5th European Thermal-Sciences Conference which tool place in The Netherlands in 2008. The major application of solar thermal relates to domestic and industrial water and space heating which require relatively low temperatures.

However, the document also looks into the industrial heat demand requiring higher temperatures which can be used for processes such as food, chemicals, petrochemicals, minerals. Although a higher temperature range can be realised with advanced solar thermal collector technologies, this potential has hardly been considered. A more enhanced development of this technology would significantly contribute to reduction the use of fossil fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

The paper also looks lists some of the barriers that have to be overcome for a sustained solar thermal application for industrial process heat.
