American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy: Emerging Technologies Report (2007)

This report was prepared by the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) in 2007 to analyze solar-assisted water heaters. The report starts with background information on how many solar units/per year and how the systems are installed. It then compares solar-assisted gas and electric water heaters, with statistics that measure: fuel use; efficiency; summer peak, winter peak and total savings; incremental costs; and additional notes on each system. It ends the report with market barriers and future steps for solar water heaters. Some common barriers include higher initial costs, other emerging technologies and lack of awareness. A market transformation, by tax credits or other incentives, will also require sustained programs, which should run as long as a decade, to increase the awareness of solar water heating benefits.
