The IEA SHC Award celebrates the work of those committed to the expansion of solar heating and cooling installations. In past years, nominations were made for a diverse field of stakeholders, such as researchers, solar companies, utilities, municipalities and private-sector end users. The photos above show two winners of past awards. On the left, there is the Canadian Drake Landing Solar Community (left), which received the award in 2013 and has recently hit a new performance milestone by recording its first year of solar-only space heating during heating season 2015-2016. On the right, there is master brewer Andreas Werner from Austrian brewery Göss, which received the award in 2016 for a 1,500 m² collector field providing solar heat for beer production processes.

The year 2017 is the first in which the annual award will be presented to individuals or municipal, regional, provincial or national organisations or entities managing the implementation of successful support programmes or policies. “With heat accounting for about half of the world’s total final energy consumption and fossil fuels currently dominating this sector, we would like to put the spotlight on successful support schemes for renewable heat and solar heating and cooling technologies in particular. Policy makers and programme administrators worldwide have traditionally been much more focused on renewable electricity,” Doug McClenahan said. McClenahan is Chair of the SHC Solar Award committee and Renewable Heat and Power R&D Programme Manager at Natural Resources Canada.

Nominations are to be submitted online by 1 May 2017. They must include:
  • Contact details of nominee
  • Information on program/policy measure
  • Explanation why program/policy measure should receive award
  • Contact details of person submitting nomination
Questions about the award can be sent to Pamela Murphy at the SHC Secretariat: secretariat@iea-shc.org
