Germany/Austria: Pioneers in Online Solar Heating Sales

Dear Solarthermalworld.org Reader,

Over decades, German and Austrian installers have managed to protect their trade – proud of their certified expertise and strong-willed in their objection to any interference by suppliers and others in business decisions like pricing. Now, there is a shift in the entire market and new business models, including online shops for heating and solar thermal equipment, emerge to offer all-in-one end consumer prices. German Thermondo is one of these pioneers. After only 2.5 years, the Berlin-based company founded in October 2013 by Philipp Pausder, Florian Tetzlaff and Kristofer Fichtner (from left on the photo) engages 220 staff – 120 of which are installers – and has sold and installed 3,000 heating systems, including around 250 which were equipped with a solar thermal add-on. A software tool developed in-house creates product offers based on around 130 parameters, requiring no “house calls.”

Second-generation family business Siko, an Austrian collector manufacturer, launched its own online shop at the beginning of 2016. The idea is to allow end consumers and installers to browse the web shop together and offer customers the highest degree of transparency when presenting options and prices. Siko shows that fixed pricing is compatible with a three-stage distribution model.

Italy: First-Year District Heating Yield Better than Expected
by Riccardo Battisti

The first and so far unique solar district heating plant in Italy completed its first year in operation in mid-May this year. The solar district heating plant was developed and installed by a newly founded Italian company, SDH Energy, which also guaranteed the solar yield.

Austria: Award-Winning Energy Service Company Publishes ESCO Model Fact Sheets
by Bärbel Epp

Energy Service Companies (ESCO) have become pioneers in the development of financing and operating models for various energy sector customers. Every two years, the so-called Contracting Award highlights exemplary ESCO projects in Germany. For the first time since the launch of the awards in 1997, the jury members presented one of these awards to a solar thermal ESCO. On 16 April, Christian Holter, Managing Director of Austrian turnkey system supplier S.O.L.I.D., was presented with the second prize for its solar energy supply contract with a district heating company in the Austrian city of Graz. The company published Tech Sheets and Fact Sheets about ESCO models as part of Task 45 of the IEA SHC programme.

Armenia: Green Leasing Programme to Fund Solar Water Heaters at Hotels
by Eugene Gerden

Armenia, a small country in South Caucasus, is home to an innovative financing scheme for solar thermal systems and other energy efficiency measures. In 2014, Armenian ACBA Leasing launched the Green Leasing programme for small and medium enterprises. According to an article on Armenian news website news.am, Green Leasing had already helped fund several solar thermal systems for different customers, such as seven hotels, four catering businesses and more than 20 service companies. One of the most well-known customers was the Tufenkian Hotel in Yerevan, Armenia’s capital: The roof installation of 1,140 vacuum tubes was done in December last year.
