Dear Solarthermalworld.org Reader,
SOLTRAIN
is an excellent showcase for a successful long-term market development
project. The Southern African Solar Thermal Training and Demonstration
Initiative (SOLTRAIN) worked on all four pillars necessary to establish a
sustainable solar thermal market: Raising awareness, increasing
competence, demonstrating that solar thermal technology works and last
but not least, setting targets and specifying actions as part of
technology roadmaps. The project coordinators now presented the
key results from SOLTRAIN I and II (2009 to 2015) during a conference in
Midrand, South Africa, on 12 February. Around 2,150 people were trained
in 80 courses across the five SADC countries – South Africa, Namibia,
Lesotho, Mozambique and Zimbabwe – and 187 solar thermal systems were
installed at social institutions and small and medium enterprises,
totalling almost 2,000 m² of collector area. Additionally, three
national Solar Thermal Technology Roadmaps were published for South
Africa, Mozambique and Namibia. The photo shows the technical tour of a
flat plate collector drainback solution at the Chalmar Beef production
unit, where two 60 m² systems produce hot water for cleaning
processes.
