Happy New Year Wishes for Many More Satisfied Solar Heat Clients

Dear Solarthermalworld.org Reader,

The solar thermal industry is suffering from a lack of customer as well as planner and installer confidence in the upstream supply chain. Standardised monitoring devices could strengthen the trust in solar heat installations by those designing or using them. Two new products from France are now ready to fill this gap: One Thermique, a control unit created by French company Tecsol and equipped with an online interface for installers, as well as the storage tank touchscreen, a unit which was developed by heating system supplier Viessmann and which displays histograms of solar yield and gas consumption per day, week, month or year.

Towards the same end goes the call by the Indian industry for a performance-based solar process heat incentive instead of the current one-time, area-based subsidy in order to eschew underperforming systems. This option was discussed with officials during a workshop at Intersolar India in Mumbai in November.

Best of luck for your business ventures in 2016

France Increases Public Support for Solar Thermal
by Vincent Boulanger
The French energy agency Ademe has been supporting renewable heat production in the industry, the district heating sector and at multi-family buildings since 2009. The budget of the national subsidy scheme, Fonds Chaleur (Heat Fund), will double in amount from around EUR 240 million per year to EUR 420 million in 2017. During 2009 to 2014, solar installations accounted for as little as 6 % of Fonds Chaleur's EUR 1.2 billion. Despite the high subsidy amount, the number of solar thermal applications is declining, as is the French solar market in general. Ademe is trying to counter the negative trend by offering new incentive schemes to address the large solar systems segments.

Europe: Strategy on Heating and Cooling Launches in February 2016
by Bärbel Epp

The publication of the EU Strategy on Heating and Cooling (Heat Strategy) is now scheduled for February 2016. The Heat Strategy was supposed to be already out on 18 November 2015. The consultation process is now over and the ENER C3 unit of the DG of Energy is drafting the final version. The photos show the two most important heads of European energy strategies: Maroš Šefčovič from Slovakia, Vice-President of the European Commission and in charge of the Energy Union (left), and Miguel Arias Cañete from Spain, the commissioner for Energy and Climate Action.

Austria: Optimising of Large-scale Collector Fields
by Bärbel Epp

One key aspect of the energy and cost optimisation of large-scale collector fields is collector array hydraulics. The Austrian institute AEE INTEC developed a set of 11 indicators which can be calculated during the design phase of a plant and allow for a more sophisticated and more economic collector array design. The results were discussed and published as part of Task 45, Large Systems: Large Solar Heating/Cooling Systems, Seasonal Storage, Heat Pumps, of the IEA Solar Heating and Cooling Programme in a two-page info leaflet and a 44-page technical document.

Denmark/Italy: Green Cooling Kit from Purix Addresses Growing Split Chiller Market
by Bärbel Epp

Cooling demand is growing worldwide and has already resulted in more than 125 million electricity-driven split chiller units installed in residential and commercial buildings each year. Danish company Purix aims at exactly this growing market segment with a green solution. “We offer plug & play solar cooling systems, either of mono- or multi-spilt design,” explains Lars Munkøe, Director and co-founder of Purix. The company was established in 2011 as a spin-off initiated by an R&D engineer in cooperation with Danish company Exima, a service provider for corporate responsibility.

Solergy Collector Label: EU Commission Confirms Clear Distinction from Energy Labelling
by Bärbel Epp

The implementation of voluntary collector label Solergy will enter into the second phase in 2016. The European Commission has confirmed that there was no likelihood of confusing the voluntary mark with the official energy labelling stipulated since September 2015 for heating devices across Europe, the Steering Committee of the Solar Heating Initiative said in a letter sent to selected stakeholders in the middle of December.
