China: 500 Participants at Annual Association Meeting
China meeting
The Chinese market is undergoing a transition: as the growth rate is decreasing, the calls for quality are becoming louder. This was obvious at the annual conference of the China Solar Thermal Industry Federation (CSTIF), which took place in Beijing in the middle of December. More than 500 participants from the Chinese solar thermal industry came together in plenary sessions and working groups to talk about the market and its technologies. Zhentao Luo (left), former Chairman of CSTIF, presented the latest market figures. The newly installed collector area in 2012 has increased by 11% to 63.9 million m², of which 37% were used for replacement. Huang Ming (middle), Chairman of the Himin Group, spoke about the different sales strategies for rural and urban areas. The third keynote speaker was Gao Jingping, CEO of Sangle, also one of the top 5 solar thermal system suppliers. He underlined the increasing competition in Chinese cities.

We would like to keep you updated on international market and technology trends in 2013.

Best wishes for a sunny and successful new year

Italy: Government Approves New Subsidy Scheme
by Valeria Verga
The decree introducing the new incentive mechanism for renewable heating systems and energy-efficient measures in Italy was published in the Official Gazette on 2 January 2013.  The decree follows Article 28 of Legislative Decree 28/11, which requires the implementation of a feed-in tariff. Still, it is important to emphasis the fact that - at the moment - the subsidy scheme is not a real feed-in-tariff. Small hot water or space heating systems (below 50 m²) installed after 2 January 2013 receive 170 EUR/m²/year for 2 years. Larger systems above 50 m² receive an annual 55 EUR/m² over 5 years. The programme is independent of the public budget by receiving its money from a levy on the natural gas tariffs.

Chile: Solar Association ACESOL Fights to Extend Tax Rebates
by Eva Augsten

2010’s “Law 20.365” tax rebate has made Chile´s solar thermal market grow substantially over the last years. Until now, however, the government has not yet agreed on continuing the rebate after 2013. The law enables construction companies to deduct a certain share of their investment costs in a solar thermal system from the down payments that the law requires on any tax declaration. Chile’s solar industry association ACESOL is lobbying to extend the tax rebate scheme, because the country´s solar thermal industry has already been affected: As the law applies to large-scale construction projects, which take a long time to plan and build, several developers have just decided to exclude solar water heaters from their construction projects.

France: Influence of New Building Standards in 2013
by Bärbel Epp

Since October 2011, the Réglementation Thermique 2012 (RT 2012) has made it a requirement for all new non-residential buildings to adhere to a minimum energy consumption level of, on average, 50 kWh/m² primary energy per year, including demand from space heating and cooling, ventilation, hot water and lighting. From January 2013 onwards, the RT2012 will also cover single- and multi-family houses everywhere in France except for overseas territories. The solar thermal industry looks with mixed feelings to 2013, because it is still unclear how the new regulations will affect the market development. Certain system suppliers are convinced that RT2012 will push solar water heaters in the residential segment. In contrast, others are afraid that hot water heat pumps will make the race, because electricity prices are still low.

Germany: Façade Hot Water
by Bärbel Epp

The aim of German insulating glass manufacturer Energy Glas GmbH was to develop a new glass-glass collector which basically fits into all post-and-beam constructions in the façade. The company’s R&D efforts succeeded: The team is proud to have realised its first two pilot projects with the new collector model. Since last year, metal absorbers in a triple-pane glazing have been installed in the façade of steel construction company Heinrich Lamparter Stahlbau GmbH & Co KG in the German city of Kassel, and in the façade of the sports centre in Etteln, Germany.
