This document was presented at the ECOWAS Solar Thermal Energy Capacity Building and Demonstration Programme conference held on 13 and 14 June 2014 in Praia, Cape Verde. The presentation was made by Dr M M Garba from the Sokoto Energy Research Centre, Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, Nigeria.
The presentation offers an overview of the solar thermal situation in Nigeria: with 80 percent of energy needs met through burning wood, there is high need of solar thermal systems. For the time being there is no Nigerian company manufacturing solar thermal systems: all systems are imported from other countries. Indeed, there are no official record on the total installed capacity in the Country.
The author identifies lack of funding for research, insufficient training activities, lack of public awareness and incentives as key barriers for the development of the solar thermal industry in Nigeria. The document also include the presentation of solar thermal pilot projects in the Country.
