Israel: Front runner in Solar Building Code with Strong Impact on Market

Total installed collector area per inhabitantThe Middle East is a hub for solar energy deployment. Three countries from this region were among the ones with the highest total installed capacity of glazed water collectors in operation per 1,000 inhabitants at the end of 2013: Israel, the Palestinian territories and Jordan. Israel is the front runner when it comes to building codes. It was the first country worldwide to pass a solar building law – back in 1980. The law stipulates the installation of a solar water heating system for new residential buildings up to a height of 27 m, which is about 8 to 9 floors. This law was extended in September 2012 and now also applies to buildings above 27 m, stipulating the installation of solar water heaters for the first seven floors under the roof.

Jordan: “The solar bylaw is not going to have a strong impact on the market”

Millennium Solar EnergySince April 2013, Jordan has had a solar bylaw in place. The rules of the bylaw were stipulated in Article 10 of Law No. 73, which had already entered into force in 2012. Solar water heaters are a mandatory requirement for every new multi-family building with more than 150 m² of living space, for every new office building exceeding 100 m² of floor space, as well as each new public building with more than 250 m². There are, however, no additional regulations regarding quality standards or system sizes. Solarthermalworld.org spoke with Angelika Cerny, International Sales Coordinator at Jordan-based solar thermal turnkey-solution provider Millennium Energy Industries (MEI), about the effectiveness of the bylaw and the market development in Jordan. Regional Market Assessment Report in the Mediterranean Countries

The purpose of this regional market assessment report is to help overcome some relevant barriers which currently prevent solar water heating (SWH) systems from providing a larger share of energy supply in Mediterranean countries, i.e. the lack of knowledge and trust on the technology, as well as the lack of systematic statistics on the solar thermal market and industry, and the very limited return on experiences.

South Africa: Fresnel Collectors Keep It Cool in MTN’s Server Rooms

Industrial SolarSince June 2014, a Fresnel collector field with 242 kWth has been feeding into the district cooling system of the MTN Group at its headquarters in Johannesburg, South Africa. MTN, which has more than 200 million customers, as well as subsidiaries in 22 countries across Africa and the Middle East, is one of the leading mobile operators in South Africa – and it is aware of the impact of global warming. “We continuously explore ways in which we can lessen the impact of our operations on the environment. This initiative will not only reduce our carbon footprint but it will substantially reduce our electricity consumption, which will release additional capacity for the national grid,” MTN’s CEO, Zunaid Bulbulia, was quoted as saying in a press release from 17 July 2014. The concentrating solar thermal plant powers the double-effect absorption chiller whose cooling capacity of 330 kW keeps temperatures low in the data centre at MTN’s head office.

Market Assessment Report and Solar Thermal Action Plan for the Mediterranean Region

“The Mediterranean region is endowed with a significant market potential and could become a frontrunner in the development of solar water heating and cooling technologies in several application areas.” This is one conclusion of the study “Solar Thermal in the Mediterranean Region - Market Assessment Report” published in September 2012. The association Observatoire Méditerranéen de l'Energie (OME) worked on both the report and a “Solar Thermal Action Plan” for the Mediterranean Region, which was published in December 2012, on behalf of the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) (see the attached documents).

Arab Countries /Germany: Kick-off Meeting for ARSOL Certification Programme

A new strategy to promote solar thermal technology in the Arab region is bearing fruit: Hosted by the German Institute for Solar and Heating Technology, SWT, the kick-off meeting for the Solar Water Heaters Certification Programme (ARSOL) took place in the south of Germany at the beginning of June. The initial strategy is to create an ARSOL network based on a certification programme similar to the Solar Keymark in Europe or the Solar Rating and Certification Corporation (SRCC) in the US. Some of the Arab countries already adapted the European Standards such as Tunisia.
