Slow down after Boom in Germany?

The crises of the financial markets did not seem to harm the speedy growth of the solar thermal market in Germany. Industry insiders at the conference Forum Solarpraxis in Berlin on the 20th/21st November agreed that the collector area installed in Germany will reach 1.7 to 1.9 million m2 (1.2 to 1.3 GW). This is almost a doubling of the 2007 market volume of 950,000 m2 (665 MW).

Great Demand in Austria

The solar thermal industry in Austria can take the financial crisis lightly: Demand is still increasing. The number of grant applications in the months between July and September was distinctly higher than in the months before. “Grant applications have increased by almost two-thirds in the third quarter to 6,047 applications. In comparison to the first quarter, they have more than doubled,“ the Austrian solar thermal association Austria Solar stated in November.

New Association and Subsidies in Thailand

The solar thermal sector in Thailand finds its voice. After one year of preparation, the Solar Thermal Association (STA) is very close to being approved by the government. “We expect approval by January 2009”, says STA president Somsak Chutanan, CEO of the company Infratech Engineering & Services. It will be exactly one year after officially founding the association in January 2008.

Solar Victory in the U.S.

The first days of October were sunny days for the renewables in the United States. First the Senate and two days later the House of Representatives passed the Energy Improvement and Extension Act of 2008 which extends the 30 % investment tax credits (ITC) for solar thermal systems as well as photovoltaics through 2016.
