Germany: Process Heat Supply from Vacuum Tubes and Air Collectors on the Rise

Process Heat StatisticsThere is a distinct difference between the make-up of the German solar process heat segment and the country’s solar thermal market in general and it concerns the type of collectors used. One in four collectors used in solar process heat systems is an air collector, although the technology contributes only around 10 % to the total collector area newly installed each year. The same has been true for vacuum tube systems, which showed a 35 % share in solar process heat installations among approved projects in 2016 – despite an overall market share of only 9 % last year. All figures are based on statistics provided by the University of Kassel’s Institute of Thermal Engineering, which has been in charge of the research accompanying the subsidy scheme on solar process heat under the auspices of Germany’s Market Rebate Programme for Renewable Energies or MAP.

Commercial Market Innovations to Put US Solar Thermal on the World Stage (2012)

This presentation was compiled by the utility solar water heating initiative US H2O. It features 4 different reports on innovations which are helping advance the development of the solar thermal market. The first report presents on the benefits of upstream financing for solar thermal industry players. The second report provides information on how third party financing is brining solar thermal installations to new settings. The third report discusses marketing and branding issues facing solar thermal businesses, and provides various solutions to these problems.

Resource/Cost Estimates for Solar Thermal Space/Water Heating 2010 and 2020 ((2004)

The Solar heat resource is dependent in the first instance on the insolation falling on the surface of Ireland. The usable power generated by solar panels will vary depending on latitude, time of year and weather conditions. According to the European Solar Thermal Industry Federation, current technology produces per square metre of solar panel between 300 and 450 thermal kWh/year. 

Solar Heating and Cooling of Buildings: Status and Perspectives (2014)

Canada/Germany: Enerconcept’s Lubi Collectors Eligible for BAFA Grants

Good news from Germany for Canadian air collector manufacturer Enerconcept: The company has completed its collector tests for the Lubi wall and the roof-mounted Luba GL at the Fraunhofer ISE institute in Freiburg. The collectors meet all of the requirements by the German Federal Office of Economics and Export Control (BAFA) and are now eligible for grants. Enerconcept’s German partner, GoGaS Goch, which will sell the air collectors together with its energy-efficient solutions for heating and process heat, is delighted with the success of the combined systems. Review of Technical Information on Renewable Heat Technologies (2011)

The UK Department of Energy and Climate Change commissioned this report to the consultancy AEA Technology.

The report analyses the technical costs of four heating technologies: air source heat pumps (ASHP); ground source heat pumps (GSHP); solar thermal and biomass.

The objective is to better understand these technologies in order to prepare the review process of the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme. The Renewable Heat Incentive went live in 2010 and it should be reviewed every four years.

REFUND+ Final Report (2009)

The REFUND + project (2006-2009), supported by the Intelligent Energy Europe and ADEME (Agence de l'environnement et de la maîtrise de l'énergie), intends to identify, monitor and evaluate the impact of incentive schemes on the development of RES heating systems in private households in five countries: Austria, Belgium, France, Italy and Portugal. Implementation of specific financial instruments was simulated in two case studies in Lithuania and Poland.
