Resource/Cost Estimates For Solar Thermal Space/Water Heating (2010-2020)

The Solar heat resource is dependent in the first instance on the insolation falling on the surface of Ireland. The usable power generated by solar panels will vary depending on latitude, time of year and weather conditions. According to the European Solar Thermal Industry Federation, current technology produces per square metre of solar panel between 300 and 450 thermal kWh/year.  The resource area is based on the roof area of existing and future dwellings.

Building a Solar Future – Recovering America’s Homes, Businesses and Industry with Solar Energy (2010)

This report was put out in 2010 by Environment America Research & Police Center. The basis of this report is America’s potential and how the goal should be set to obtain 10 percent or more total energy consumption from the sun by 2030 using solar technology. Technologies described to accomplish this include: concentrating solar power, solar water heaters, solar space heating/cooling, and passive solar design. Through the use of these technologies, it can affect homes, businesses, transportation and entire communities.

Concentrated Solar Power – Focusing the sun’s energy for large-scale power generation (2009)

This fact sheet was written by the Environmental and Energy Study Institute in 2009. The document starts with a brief background on solar thermal energy and then describes the different types of solar thermal systems (parabolic trough, linear fresnal reflectors, dish/engine, power tower). It covers nighttime generation and how systems use supplemental fuels or thermal storage. The “Water and Land Impacts” section discusses land requirements for single rooftop systems to large power tower systems and water usage.

Solar Thermal Community Action – Canada (2008)

This is an action manual presented by the Canadian Solar Industries Association (CanSIA) presented in 2008. The manual follows an agenda which starts with the solar thermal basics and applications and moves on to why solar thermal energy can succeed in Canada. It mentions the best economic choices for commercial and residential solar thermal systems and includes a solar resource assessment chart. This displays a map that is color-coded for the amount of solar radiation annually in Canada.

Case Study on Measures to Support Solar Water Heating (2007)

This paper was prepared by the research center, LEPII, and the World Energy Council in 2007. The report breaks down the total installation capacity, worldwide and identifies the largest installing countries in the world by per capita, cost and total systems. It also includes case studies on individual countries including Austria, China and Mexico. The case studies define the market, barriers, incentive measures and main issues. Te main issues talk about market growth and what’s stunting it or what is needed to grow it further.

American Solar Works – Harness Your Energy for Your Business (2008)

This document was prepared by the American Solar Works Holdings LLC. While it gives background information, it primarily tries to encourage solar thermal use for commercial buildings and businesses. Several commercial examples are used of what solar thermal can be used for including: heating hotel domestic hot water, providing showers for athletes and students, washing livestock, providing “green” clean clothes at a laundry mat, heating a building in the winter and augment your absorption chilling in the summer.

CSP Deployment in Mexico (2012)

EWG Project Proposals for Funding (2006)

The Energy Working Group (EWG) put together this document of thirteen project proposals for funding.  Japan, United States and New Zealand are some of the economies that the document focuses on in terms of projects like the “Application of Energy Indicator Analysis in APEC Economies”.  Starting on page 13, there is a proposal for Chile.

SOLARGENIX ENERGY, LLC Proposed Guidelines for Implementing California’s Renewables Portfolio Standard (RPS). (2004)

Solar thermal generation (with gas assist) has been shown to be cost competitive when compared to other similar fossil technologies providing comparable products, i.e. firm on-peak capacity and energy.  The recently published CEC Cost Comparison Report concluded that, essentially, solar thermal generation with gas assist is cost competitive to combustion turbine technology when used in the same application (firm peaking).
