2009 Updates and Trends – IREC

Submitted by Raquel Ponte Costa on June 14, 2015

This report was from the Interstate Renewable Energy Council (IREC) Annual Meeting in October, 2009. The report is broken down to cover state incentives & policy trends, solar installation trends, net metering & interconnection updates & trends, and workforce development and training. For current policies that are mentioned to withstand solar growth, they mention the Energy Improvement and Reinvestment Act (part of the federal “bailout bill” in 2008) and the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (part of the “stimulus bill” in 2009).

Guidebook for Solar Water Heating Projects in Philadelphia (2011)

Submitted by Raquel Ponte Costa on May 31, 2015

This guidebook was created by the US Department of Energy’s Solar America Cities partnership in conjunction with the City of Philadelphia. It explains how solar thermal works, how to size and install, and the permitting and listening system for projects in the city.

Metered Solar Water Heating Systems: a Nonnegotiable (2012)

Submitted by Raquel Ponte Costa on May 30, 2015

This white paper was written by Piper Star Foster of the energy monitoring technology manufacturer Amatis. It makes the case for the use of energy monitoring systems applied to solar thermal hot water heating technology.

Commonwealth Solar Hot Water Program Residential Performance Monitoring Interim Report (2012)

Submitted by Raquel Ponte Costa on May 30, 2015

This report was created and published by the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC). It provides a preliminary analysis of the monitoring that had been done to judge the efficiency of select water heating systems which were installed under the Commonwealth Solar Hot Water Program.

Solar Hot Water Pilot Program Evaluation (2012)

Submitted by Raquel Ponte Costa on May 26, 2015

This report comes from The Electric and Gas Program Administrators of Massachusetts. It is an evaluation of the successes of the National Grid’s Solar Hot Water (SHW) Pilot Program in brining solar thermal water heating to low-income residential neighborhoods in Massachusetts.

Solar Thermal Flat Plate Collectors (2011)

Submitted by Raquel Ponte Costa on May 24, 2015

This technical document was created and published by solar manufacturers Chromagen and State Water Heaters. It is a technical readout of their solar thermal flat plate collectors. The document lists and analyzes many of the key features of their collectors including the single plane glazing, the nylon glass fiber moldings, and the absorber plate. A diagram breaks down and labels the various layers of the collectors, from the glazing to the inner tube configuration. Charts and tables end the document by demonstrating various aspects of the collector’s efficiency.

Wind Issues in Solar Thermal Performance Ratings (2009)

Submitted by Raquel Ponte Costa on May 24, 2015

This report comes from the United States National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), and was written by Jay Burch of NREL and Ross Casey of the University of Colorado. It reports on their research findings on issues with the U.S. Solar Rating and Certification Corporation’s (SRCC) solar thermal performance ratings system. The researchers studied potential biases in SRCC’s testing of glazed and unglazed collectors in regards to how wind is factored into the testing.

Solar Water Heating in Brazil (2006)

Submitted by Raquel Ponte Costa on April 9, 2015

This article was written for “Tiempo”, a newsletter on climate and economic development.  It provides information on solar thermal water heating programs targeted for low-income families in Brazil.

Solar Thermal Energy Technology and Market Trends (2010)

Submitted by Raquel Ponte Costa on April 7, 2015

This presentation was created by Frank Proske, the Market Development Manager for Renewables at A.O. Smith Water Products Co. in Pennsylvania, USA.  The focus of the presentation is on the evolution and current state of various solar thermal technologies and the maturation of their market.

The presentation identifies a few key factors as the driving trends in the solar thermal market.

Utility Solar Water Heating Initiative and Energy Star (2011)

Submitted by Raquel Ponte Costa on April 7, 2015

This letter was written by Chip Bircher of USH2O, a solar thermal water heating industry group, to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). It answers questions that the EPA had regarding solar thermal water heating and its eligibility for the Energy Star Program.

USH2O makes the argument that solar thermal water heating should remain eligible for the Energy Star labeling program. Solar thermal sales have shown consistent growth, and so it is important to maintain the relationship as the use of solar thermal becomes more widespread.
