Italy: 10,000 m² ORC-Connected Fresnel and Parabolic Trough Fields

Fresnel Collector Field ItalyItaly’s feed-in tariff for medium-size concentrating solar power plants has supported the installation of a 10,000 m² Fresnel collector array in Sardinia (see photo). The mirrors have been in operation since spring this year and are connected to an Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) unit with 600 kW of nominal electric power. Construction for a second demonstration system, a 5 MWth parabolic trough field linked to an ORC turbine, is currently underway in Sicily. Both installations heat thermal oil to between 250 and 300 °C and use it to transfer heat directly from the solar panels to the ORC units by Italian-based Turboden, bringing their electrical efficiency to up to 25 %.

Mexico: New Idea Exchange on Solar Process Heat

Mexico Platform MeetingDuring an event in Mexico City on 30 August, a collaboration agreement was signed to establish a platform for promoting solar heat in Mexico. The partners in this project are ANES, the national solar energy association; DKTI Solar, the Large-Scale Solar Energy Programme by the German Agency for International Cooperation; and CONUEE, the National Commission for Energy Efficiency. The agreement is intended to result in an inter-institutional platform, to which stakeholders will contribute at their own expense.

India: UNDP-GEF Project Paves Way for Commercialising Industrial Process Heat

Dr GoswamiThe five-year UNDP-GEF project Market Development of Concentrating Solar Thermal Heating (CSH) Technologies for Process Heat Applications has paved the way towards commercialisation. The objective was to accelerate demand for CSH systems in industrial, commercial and public facilities by organising stakeholder workshops, strengthening the industrial supply chain and implementing quality assurance measures. Solarthermalworld.org spoke with Dr R P Goswami, National Project Coordinator and Director at the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy, about CSH market development in India.

Austria: How to De-Risk Renewable Investments in Industry

Results World Map SurveyTwo-thirds of the 71 companies listed on the World Map of Solar Process Heat Specialists 2017 agreed that achieving bankability for solar process heat projects required huge efforts to be made. They said that key barriers to implementation were a lack of technical expertise in risk assessment at financial institutions and the relatively small investment amounts in individual projects. To rectify this situation, EU project TrustEE is aiming to combine several of industry’s energy efficiency and renewable energy (EE+RE) investment projects into one package to be offered to pension funds and assurance companies. IEA-RETD: Lessons Learned from 21 Renewable Projects in Industry

Case Study MapThree years after the International Renewable Energy Agency underlined in its June 2014 Renewable Energy in Manufacturing study the great potential for using renewables in industry, the International Energy Agency has published a comprehensive report on the same topic. It is titled Fostering renewable energy integration in the industry and consists of several documents divided into two parts: a review of 21 case studies on renewable systems integrated into industrial processes and a policy section identifying eight issues which may attract or deter industrial stakeholders intending to deploy renewable production assets at their facilities. Commissioned by the IEA Renewable Energy Technology Deployment Program (IEA-RETD), the publication was lead-authored by French-based ENEA Consulting. It is one of the milestones towards an IEA Insights Paper on Renewables in Industry planned to come out in November 2017.

IEA SHC Solar Academy: Record Participation in Solar Heat for Industry Webinar

Webinar Screen ShotWith more than 500 registered participants from 78 countries, Solar Heating for Industrial Processes has been the most frequented webinar of this year’s series hosted by the International Solar Energy Society, proving that there is great interest in this solar thermal application among planners, collector manufacturers and research institutions. This second IEA SHC Solar Academy webinar had researchers present reports and useful tools based on the work of IEA Solar Heating and Cooling Programme Task 49, Solar Heat Integration in Industrial Processes (2012 to 2015). A recording of the event is available online.
 

South Africa: SHIP Opportunities in Agri-Processing and Textile Production

SHIP process heatSouth Africa shows large but untapped potential in terms of Solar Heat for Industrial Processes (SHIP). So far, there have been only seven systems in operation across the country and they provide heat in fields as varied as textile manufacturing (see photo), brewing, cheesemaking and automotive production. A recently published study titled Industrial scale solar heat in South Africa: Opportunities in agri-processing and textiles estimates the potential in agri-processing to be as high as 3.76 million m² of collector area and in textile manufacturing at around 519,000 m² (see the attached document). The 72-page document written by the WWF South Africa in cooperation with the Centre for Renewable and Sustainable Energy Studies (CRSES) of Stellenbosch University and non-profit organisation GreenCape looks at the key drivers for and barriers to increased SHIP deployment in the southernmost country in Africa.

USA: Solar Steam Installation for California’s Pistachio Harvest

SunvaporCalifornian start-up Sunvapor has found its first solar steam customer for a demonstration system with the Green Parabolic Trough Collector technology developed in-house. In April 2017, it announced that it had gone into partnership with Horizon Nut to install a 50-kW solar process heat installation at the latter’s pistachio processing facility in Firebaugh. Sunvapor’s CEO and founder Philip Gleckman confirmed that the system is scheduled to come online at the end of this year. The fluid heated to 230 °C is said to be used for pasteurising, blanching and roasting pistachios. Horizon Nut is a growers’ cooperative which collectively processes about 70 % of the pistachios in California. The photo shows a laboratory prototype of the parabolic trough collector with the wooden mounting system. This prototype was used to validate the structural model.

Renewable Global Futures Report: Experts Divided on Future of Heating

CoverIs the transition to 100 % renewables at global level a feasible and realistic objective? What share will renewably sourced heat have by 2050? Will the electrification of heat continue? These are three of more than 100 questions which were answered in interviews with 114 experts from all around the world. Interviewees came from NGOs, research institutions, governmental bodies and international organisations. REN21’s Renewable Global Futures Report published in April 2017 summed up their explanations as part of twelve Great Debates. Lead author Dr Sven Teske from the University of Technology Sydney, Australia, presented some of the key findings of the report during a June webinar organised by the International Solar Energy Society. 
 

IEA SHC Solar Academy: Solar Heating for Industrial Processes

SHC Academy LogoResearchers have worked intensively across national borders to increase deployment of Solar Heat for Industrial Processes (SHIP), which is regarded as one of the most promising solar thermal applications. When IEA SHC Task 49, Solar Heat Integration in Industrial Processes, was launched in 2012, there were reportedly around 120 SHIP systems adding up to 88 MWth. Over the last years, total installation figures have tripled to more than 500 systems and a minimum of 291 MWth globally.
