Solar Electric and Solar Thermal Energy: A Summary of Current Technologies (2014)

This document, written by Tayyebatossadat P. Aghaei of the Global Energy Network Institute (GENI), illustrates the different applications of solar thermal and photovoltaic technology. 

After a brief introduction on the history of solar energy, the document firstly explains the functioning of large scale solar thermal technology systems, differentiating between flat-plate collectors and concentrator collectors. This section includes also graphic representations of the different systems.

Development of a Solar Rating and Certification Laboratory in Minnesota (2009)

This is a report prepared by the Minnesota Department of Commerce Office of Energy Security (OES) to the Legislature. It focuses on solar thermal technologies for domestic hot water and space heating. This legislation came about from concerns that the nationally recognized solar thermal certification organization, Solar Rating and Certification Corporation (SRCC), process was inadequately serving Minnesota’s solar thermal industry.

Conceptual Design of a Solar-Thermal Heating System with Seasonal Storage for a Vashon Greenhouse (2006)

This is a thesis research paper from the University of Washington in 2006. The objective of the study is to design a solar thermal heating system with seasonal storage for a greenhouse, optimized for the environmental impact, thermal efficiency and cost. The main goals of the study is to: provide 100 percent solar heat to the greenhouse; limit the size of the storage to fit within the footprint of the greenhouse; minimize environmental impact and cost; maintain greenhouse temperatures ideal for optimum growing; maintain historic greenhouse structure.

Solar Thermal Space Heating for New Construction Utilizing Thermal Storage (2010)

This whitepaper was researched, written and published by Thermal Storage Solutions, LLC. It provides a cost-benefit analysis of using solar thermal space heating and thermal storage for new construction. The whitepaper argues that the main benefits of solar thermal are reducing energy costs and diminishing the carbon footprint of a system. The paper sets out to provide this by comparing residences with traditional heating systems and ones with solar thermal systems.

Advanced Thermal Solar System with Heat Storage for Residential House Space Heating (2005)

This report was written by Kazimierz Szymocha of the Alberta Research Council. It reports on their prototype solar thermal air heating and storage system.

The system in question is both a space heating installation and a direct heat storage system. It stores heated air during the day and then releases it at night.
