American Solar Works – Harness Your Energy for Your Business (2008)

This document was prepared by the American Solar Works Holdings LLC. While it gives background information, it primarily tries to encourage solar thermal use for commercial buildings and businesses. Several commercial examples are used of what solar thermal can be used for including: heating hotel domestic hot water, providing showers for athletes and students, washing livestock, providing “green” clean clothes at a laundry mat, heating a building in the winter and augment your absorption chilling in the summer.

Heating Water with Solar Energy Costs Less at the Phoenix Federal Correctional Institution (2004)

This report was released by the Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy section of the U.S. Department of Energy in 2004. It highlights a large-scale solar thermal system installed at the Phoenix Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) and breaks down the statistical output. The system was financed through an Energy Savings Performance Contract (ESPC), which include an average annual savings of $6,700.

On the Rise – Solar Thermal Power and the Fight Against Global Warming (2008)

This report was put together by Environment America Research and Policy Center in 2008 and is about how the use of solar thermal technologies can help stop the threat of global warming. Electricity generation accounts for more than a third of America’s emissions of global warming pollution. Using concentrating solar power (CSP) can make a large contribution toward reducing global warming pollution in the United States. This document states the capacity in the States to expand its solar thermal market.

This paper was prepared by a collaboration between the Hawaiian Electric Company, Eugene Water & Electric Board, Lakeland Electric, Wisconsin Public Service and JEA in 2003. Four utility solar water heating success stories are mentioned from Hawaii, Oregon and Florida. This paper recognizes that the U.S. solar industry is stable and poised for growth, but is still not broadly accepted. Support organizations are mentioned, along with what qualifications go into solar thermal installation before they mention the success stories.

Solar Thermal Energy – New Light on a Mature and Market Ready Technology (2007)

This presentation was created by Sterling Planet in 2007. This presentation covers several aspects of solar thermal technology including system types, job creation, market growth, different applications, and the outlook of solar thermal energy in the future. The beginning of the presentation talks about the basic uses of solar thermal energy and the common system types you’ll see on the market. It moves on to job creation and gives the reader estimations of how rapidly jobs can be created (solar equivalent of 200,000 residential systems is approximately 34,885 jobs created).

Solar-Assisted Technology Provides Heat for California Industries (2011)

Created by the California Energy Commission, this brochure highlights the benefits of solar thermal collectors as it pertains to industrial development in California. It focuses on augmented solar thermal collectors and how they can be used to assist in a variety of industrial processes. The SAB Miller brewing facility in Irwindale, CA volunteered to install the solar thermal systems in order to drive key industrial process heat applications at the facility.

Low-cost Distributed Solar-thermal-electric Power Generation (2004)

This report was written by A. Der Minassians et. al. of UC Berkley. It measures the feasibility of solar thermal systems used for electric power generation, which could compete for price parity with other sources of electricity. The paper claims that when using only low-cost materials and manufacturing processes it is still possible to design a solar thermal electric system. The collectors should operate at a medium temperature of 125C to 150C.

The Development of a Solar Thermal Water Purification, Heating, and Power Generation System: A Case Study (2009)

This report was written by Jerome Johnson and Michael Cropp of the Center for Innovation and Development at the University of Wisconsin. The paper reports on their research into the design and implementation of a water purifier that is powered by solar thermal, which also uses that heat for heating and power purposes.

Solar Thermal Technology (2005)

This presentation is from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) OpenCourseWare program on Sustainable Energy. It provides an overview of solar thermal technology including power towers, solar thermal cooling and storage technologies. Different concentrating solar thermal technologies such as solar chimneys, parabolic troughs and heliostat fields are all briefly detailed with graphs and key points about their history and economic viability.

Solar Air Heating for Municipal Facilities (2003)

This case study focuses on the City of Toronto Vehicle Maintenance Garage and their switch to a solar thermal air heating system.

The garage hosts the town’s garbage trucks and other work vehicles, so there was a need to both ensure airflow, and because of the cold temperatures of Toronto, ensure reliable heat. So the town installed three solar heated fans that provide the interior of the garage with a steady stream of fresh air that has been heated by the sun.
