Throughout much of the Western U.S., water is a scarce resource. Growing cities and power plants often compete directly with the agricultural sector - and environmental needs - for limited water supplies. Developing new, renewable energy supplies will have varied impacts on water resources. It is important that, in the process, renewable energy development does not contribute to or exacerbate water supply and quality challenges.

It was financed by the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA) on behalf of International Science Programme (ISP) at Uppsala University, involving also the department of Biomedical and Physics at University of Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Solar-driven Water Treatment Experiences in India (2014)

This presentation on solar-driven water treatment was given by SolarSpring’s Dip.-Ing. Lorenz Bauer at Intersolar Europe in June 2014.  After a short introduction on SolarSprings’ products and activities, the speaker presented 4 different solar water treatment projects that were conducted in India. These 4 projects use specific solar disinfection systems and their aim is to provide sufficient safe drinking water to the communities’ populations and create an optimized municipal waste water treatment.

Technology Review and Selection of CSP and Desalination Configurations (2009)

This Final Report is the deliverable of Work Package (WP1) from the MED-CSD Project. Designed to assess combined solar power and desalination plants’ technico-economic potential in Mediterranean Partner countries, it was a project funded by the European Commission under the 7th Framework Programme (FP7). It ran between June 2008 and June 2010.

This is a presentation from the CERN (European Organisation for Nuclear Research) about solar thermal technologies and applications.

The presentation reviews the different market applications (hot water and heating, space heating and cooling, desalination, pool heating, industrial processes and electricity production). It also gives data on the European energy market and the market share of the different solar technologies. The document indicates the market drivers for solar thermal and the forecasts for the coming years.

 

Singapore: Solar Desalination Unit incorporated into a Container

 Demonstration plant at Marina Barrage, Singapore” At the beginning of July, memsys clearwater distribution Pte. Ltd. and Nanyang Technological University presented a new desalination technology at the Singapore International Water Week. Besides several industrial applications, the small and mobile technology, which uses solar thermal panel energy for the vaporisation process, can also be used during disaster relief efforts. The unit is driven by solar energy alone - both thermal and PV – and can be placed in a 20-foot shipping container. The photo shows the demonstration plant at Marina Barrage, Singapore.

Solar Thermal Seawater Distillation Activities at the Plataforma Solar de Almería (2003)

This article was written by a group of researchers from the Almeria Solar Platform in Spain (CIEMAT) and explores the results of the research activities undertaken in this Platform with respect to solar desalination in the framework of the Aquasol Project.

Solar desalination is a feasible and attractive option for regions suffering from fresh water shortage and benefiting from high insolation levels.

The Aquasol Project initiated in 2002 and is expected to reduce the overall system investment cost as well as improve energy efficiency.
