Brazil´s enormous SHIP potential

Source: IBGE/CNI 2015 and Solar PaybackTens of thousands of companies in Brazil’s industry could be interested in using solar heat, as shown by the chart at the beginning of this news article. Businesses which require large amounts of thermal energy below 400 °C can be found in several sectors, from beverage, chemical and food production to leather and textile making – the right kind of clientele for solar thermal suppliers. These are two of the key findings from the Solar Heat for Industry: Brazil study (see the attached document written in Portuguese), which was published this month as part of the Solar Payback project. It will be presented during the Solar Payback Conference, a half-day event scheduled to take place on 30 August at the Intersolar South America in Sao Paulo (see the attached flyer).

Photo: Grenaa VarmevaerkOn 18 June, work on a new solar field for district heating started in the Danish town of Grenaa, on the east coast of the Jutland peninsula. The municipality said the existing 12,000 m2, or 8.4 MWth, system had been running to everyone’s satisfaction since 2014. In May, it inked a deal for another solar field measuring nearly 21,000 m2, or 14.7 MWth, to be delivered by Finnish-based flat plate collector manufacturer Savosolar as a turnkey installation. The aim of the expansion is to use solar thermal energy to meet demand for district heating between May and July, so that the wood chip boilers can be turned off during the same period.

Vacuum tubes with CPCs dominate SHIP market

Concentrating solar thermal technologies continue to flourish in India. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has reported to have received concentrating solar thermal applications worth more than 10,000 m2 since the national subsidy scheme was extended in February 2018. Most applications were about solar heat for industrial processes, also known as SHIP, and cooling. Vacuum tube collectors with CPCs, short for compound parabolic concentrators, are one of the technologies eligible for the scheme and took the lion’s share at nearly 80 %.

Dish technology in Asia

Photo: Megawatt SolutionsA webinar that took place on 22 May put the spotlight on concentrating dish systems manufactured in India and Pakistan. Titled Concentrating Solar Heat Solutions Available Today for Carbon-Free Industrial Heat and Steam Generation and organised by Spanish-based consultancy ATA Insights, it highlighted the main advantages of these dishes: flexibility and low space requirements. The photo shows a solar process heat installation at a dairy in India. A recording of the entire event and the presentations that were held are available online.

Daniel Mugnier Is New IEA SHC Chairman

The new chair of the IEA Solar Heating and Cooling Programme, also known as IEA SHC, will be Daniel Mugnier, a leading expert in solar cooling. Mugnier, who heads the R&D department at French-based Tecsol, was elected during an executive committee meeting in Stockholm on 21 June and will hold the position for two years. He will replace Australian Ken Guthrie, who has chaired IEA SHC since 2014.

India needs massive awareness-raising campaign

Solar India ExpoIndia’s opportunities and challenges around solar process heat for industry, or SHIP, were the central topic of a session at the 3rd Solar India Expo in May. First, representatives for both currently running support schemes, Solar Payback and a renewable energy project managed by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, or UNIDO, spoke about SHIP market development and projects. Then, three Indian-based SHIP system suppliers presented successful demonstration systems to the around 50 attendees of the event, held in India’s capital New Delhi.

12,000 m² of concentrating solar planned in Brazil

Photo: RackamA consortium of around 10 companies is planning to build a 12,000 m² concentrating solar plant in Jaborandi, Bahia state, to the northeast of Brazil’s capital. This combined process heat and power system will use parabolic trough collectors (see photo) by Canadian-based Rackam to dry tobacco and generate electricity for an agribusiness. The relevant contracts have been signed and construction is set to start this summer. The plant is scheduled for completion in the first quarter of 2019.

A survey of the global market for concentrating collectors

Graphic: Solar PaybackConcentrating collector technologies are becoming an increasingly popular choice for customers requiring industrial heat or space heating. This year’s Renewables 2018 Global Status Report includes, for the first time, data regarding new installations of concentrating systems. Published at the beginning of June by the Paris-based REN21 network, it states that a minimum of 143 MWth was set up in 2017. The largest markets were Oman (100 MWth), China (15 MWth), Italy (14 MWth), India (2.8 MWth) and Mexico (2.8 MWth). The image shows the three technologies available for sale.

Solar steam for process heat and air conditioning

Photo: Industrial SolarGerman Fresnel collector manufacturer Industrial Solar has completed its second industrial solar heat installation in Jordan. Three years after it had put into operation a Fresnel field at pharmaceuticals company Ram Pharma, a 700 kW concentrating collector system came online at tobacco manufacturer Japan Tobacco International, also known as JTI, in late 2017. The solar steam that the new system produces is used in two ways. It is injected into the steam grid to supply process heat to manufacturing and it powers a new installed double-effect absorption chiller to provide on-site buildings with air conditioning. JTI regards the solar steam unit as a strategic investment to demonstrate its commitment to establishing sustainable supply chains and, especially, to reducing the carbon footprint of its global operations.
