Solar Thermal in Industries: Status and Perspectives (2012)

This presentation was made by Werner B. Koldehoff at the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) workshop "Solar Thermal Thailand" held in Berlin on March 2012. It presents the status of solar thermal industry in Germany and worldwide to analyse the potential develoment of the industry in Thailand. 

Developments of Solar Thermal in China (2011)

This presentation was given as Tsinghua University in 2011, and gives a chronological overview of the rapid development of China's solar thermal market since 1978, where research first began. The research projects described in the presentation have successfully commercialised solar water heating, which had a 50.8% market share of Chinese water heating in 2008.

Barriers to Technology Diffusion: the Case of Solar Thermal Technologies (2006)

This joint paper from the OECD and IEA (October 2006) looks into the different barriers that exist which prevent solar thermal technologies to deliver its real potential. Next to listing the barriers, the document also looks into means to overcome these, the existing technologies & markets and identifies best practices which can be used by policy makers in both industrialised and developing countries.

Three barriers to diffusion are analysed in more detail:

Energy Directive Adopted by European Parliament

It's a great step forward acknowledging solar heating and cooling to be a key factor for climate protection: For the first time, heating and cooling is covered by an European Directive. The new Energy Directive was adopted with 634 votes in favour and only 25 against and 25 absent in the European Parliament at the 17th December 2008.

What can solar thermal technology be used for?

There is a wide variety of applications for solar thermal technology. The most common application is the heating of pool water, the heating of domestic hot water and space heating. Not very wide spread yet are solar cooling systems, because of the complexity of the technology and the high initial investment costs.

Renewable Energy Technology Roadmap up to 2020

Published in January 2007, by EREC (European Renewable Energy Council), the document shows the ambitions of the European Renewable Energy Industry to reach the EU targets for 2020 for different sectors, including electricity, heating & cooling, and biofuels.
It provides roadmaps for each sector, predicting its development and the conditions under which progress can be made.
