Solar industrial heat market – a 2017 survey

Image: solar-payback.com/suppliers2017 was a record year for systems providing solar heat for industrial processes, since at least 110 large ones adding up to 192,580 m² were put into operation. This has been the result of a survey among around 80 turnkey suppliers currently listed on the SHIP Supplier World Map, created by the international Solar Payback project. The total at the end of 2017 stood at approximately 635 SHIP systems, a 21 % increase over the 525 installations which a similar survey showed in early 2017.

REN 21: Solar Thermal Contributes Significantly to Hot Water Production

top ten 2012According to REN21’s Renewables 2014 Global Status Report, which was published at the UN-hosted Sustainable Energy for All Forum in New York at the beginning of June, solar thermal technologies contribute significantly to hot water production in many countries and increasingly to space heating and cooling, as well as industrial processes. REN21 is a global multi-stakeholder network for renewable energy policy, connecting key actors from governments, international organisations, industry associations, science and academia, as well as civil society. First released in 2005, the report provides a comprehensive and timely overview of renewable energy markets, industries, investments and policy developments worldwide. The renewable energy data is provided by an international network of more than 500 contributors, researchers and authors. According to report data, the world added 55.4 GWth (more than 79 million m2) of solar heat capacity in 2012, increasing the cumulative installed capacity of all collector types in operation by over 14 % for a year-end total of 283.4 GWth. The chart above shows the shares in global capacity in operation across 2012’s top ten countries.

Austria: Search for Innovative Incentive Schemes

AEE studyAustria has a leading position in solar energy use worldwide. 3.5 GWth (5 million m²) of solar thermal capacity had been installed in total until the end of 2012. Based on the specific collector area per inhabitant, Austria ranks third after Cyprus and Israel. The key factor for the country’s success has been the mix of incentive and R&D programmes, as well as awareness-raising campaigns since the mid-1980s. In one area, however, these measures have not succeeded: The system prices for the end consumer have remained unchanged and have not followed the cost reduction curve of the photovoltaic sector. This is why the Austrian Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology (bmvit) had mandated AEE Intec, the Austrian Institute for Sustainable Technologies, to carry out a stakeholder survey in order to develop innovative incentive instruments which could give fresh impetus to increases in price performance ratios of solar thermal systems of all sizes.
 

Solar Process Heat: “Higher Yield than in Domestic Applications”

Solar heat for Industrial Processes (SHIP) has a large potential and is an important, upcoming market for solar thermal – this was the conclusion which Christoph Lauterbach, Research Associate at the German University of Kassel, drew in his presentation at the Intersolar Europe 2012 in Munich. In the case of Germany, Lauterbach identified a potential of 16 TWh/a. This is 3.4% of the country’s total energy consumption and corresponds to 36 million m² of collector area. According to Lauterbach, the overall potential for the 25 EU members amounts to 70 TWh/a – approximately four times as much.

Which are the major solar thermal markets worldwide?

By far the largest solar thermal market in the world according to newly installed solar thermal capacity per year is China. In 2008, around 21 GWth (30 million m2) were sold in China, which was around 80 % of the world global solar thermal market.

Is solar thermal technology still a niche market?

There are a number of mature markets like Israel, Austria, Barbados, China or Cyprus where solar thermal is used by a wide majority of people for heating the domestic hot water and sometimes for room heating.
