Solar Electric and Solar Thermal Energy: A Summary of Current Technologies (2014)

This document, written by Tayyebatossadat P. Aghaei of the Global Energy Network Institute (GENI), illustrates the different applications of solar thermal and photovoltaic technology. 

After a brief introduction on the history of solar energy, the document firstly explains the functioning of large scale solar thermal technology systems, differentiating between flat-plate collectors and concentrator collectors. This section includes also graphic representations of the different systems.

Iran: POMAco’s View on Iranian Solar Thermal Market

After Iran’s elections in June and the new government taking over in August, hopes are that solar thermal could become an increasingly important technology in the Mideast country. Hossein Riyahi Dehkordi, Managing Director of Iranian solar company Polar Mehr Iranian - POMAco, expects the new government to improve the existing incentive schemes for solar thermal. “New investments and more support for green energy are in reach,” he says. But there has not yet been any specific announcement on how the improvement would look like. The photo shows the solar thermal installation in a public bath, the most common application for solar water heaters in Iran. The following article relies mainly on information from Mr Dehkordi, who gave an exclusive interview to solarthermalworld.org. POMAco is a joint-venture of Iranian company Solar Polar, a subsidiary of heating system specialist Polar Industrial Group and a collector manufacturer since 1999, and solar thermal system importer Taban Mehr Taksa, which is part of the Iranian Taksa Trade Development Group.

Thailand: Advanced Training in Large-Scale Solar Thermal Applications

The solar thermal week of the Thai-German Renewable Energy Advanced Training 2012 in Bangkok in September attracted a fair number of around 20 national and international participants (see photo). Professor Christoph Menke from the German University of Applied Sciences Trier (ninth from left) hold lectures on how to plan, mount and operate large-scale solar water heating systems for hotels and industrial processes. In addition to the solar thermal training, the three-week course for advanced learners also offered one week each for bio-energy and photovoltaics. The entire event was organised by the Thai Joint Graduate School of Energy and Environment (JGSEE) and supported by the German Academic Exchange Service, DAAD.

Canada/Denmark: Cooperation between Enerconcept and Solarventi

 Christian Vachon (left) and Hans Jørgen Christensen Canadian air collector manufacturer Enerconcept uses Danish know-how for the industrial version of its Luba collectors. On 1 July, CEO Christian Vachon (left) entered into an agreement with the owner of Danish company Solarventi, Hans Jørgen Christensen, allowing Enerconcept to use an air collector patent of the Scandinavians. The innovative technology has already been implemented in a major project in Quebec City.
