Denmark/Italy: Green Cooling Kit from Purix Addresses Growing Split Chiller Market

PurixCooling demand is growing worldwide and has already resulted in more than 125 million electricity-driven split chiller units installed in residential and commercial buildings each year. Danish company Purix aims at exactly this growing market segment with a green solution. “We offer plug & play solar cooling systems, either of mono- or multi-spilt design,” explains Lars Munkøe, Director and co-founder of Purix. The company was established in 2011 as a spin-off initiated by an R&D engineer in cooperation with Danish company Exima, a service provider for corporate responsibility. “Prior to the founding of Purix, the partners had designed and operated prototypes for a year, filed a patent application and gathered market intelligence,” explains Munkøe. The photo shows the outdoor unit of the cooling kit, including a Purix A25s chiller and two conventional collectors, which can be operated in a heating mode as well.

This document was presented at the 2nd European Conference on Polygeneration (30 March-1 April 2011, Tarragona, Spain) by the researchers D. Chemisana, J. Lopez-Villada, A. Coronas and J. I. Rossel.

It analysis the energy consumption of buildings from Mediterranean countries and the solutions offered by solar cooling and solar concentrator systems. The paper consists of a comparative analysis between two cooling systems: one with evacuated tube collectors and a single-effect absorption chiller, the other with a solar concentrating system and double-effect absorption chiller.

This is a scientific paper done by Luis Eduardo about using solar energy for refrigeration. Refrigeration becomes very important especially for rural areas where electricity is not reliable. Using renewable energy in rural areas would decrease the use of electrical energy in the country, providing thus more reliable energy to the populations of these remote areas.

This document reports the results of a study undertaken at the Ager Sectus Winery, near Blenheim, in New Zealand. The study looked at different solar cooling technologies and their possible use in the winery.

The document starts by explaining the different solar cooling technologies (PV, heat engine, absorption chiller, etc). Solar thermal absorption cooling is the most popular air-conditioning application and is used in different parts of the world. The performance of the systems is still variable, but the average payback period is of 15-20 years.

USA: ClimateWell wins Technology Contest of General Electrics

 ClimateWell absorption chillers” ClimateWell AB, located in Stockholm, is one of 12 companies which were chosen among 4,000 applicants in a ten-week contest organised by US-American General Electric Co (GE). ClimateWell won in the Efficient Appliances category and received a USD 100,000 concept stage grant. Since 2008, the Swedish company has run a production unit for absorption chillers in Spain, similar to the system shown in the picture.
