USA/California: CALSEIA´s New President Promises to “Keep SHC on the Agenda”

The California Solar Energy Industries Association (CALSEIA) named Ed Murray, a solar expert with more than 30 years of experience in the field, its new president in early January 2017. He succeeded Rick Reed, Director of California-based collector manufacturer Sunearth. Murray, a 25-year member of CALSEIA, is President of Aztec Solar, a solar heating and solar electricity system supplier from Sacramento, California. “He’s the right person to lead CALSEIA in the uncertain times ahead,” reads the press release sent the day after the election. “I attend meetings in the states and in Washington DC to make sure that SHC is kept on the agenda and not completely overshadowed by solar PV,” Murray describes his commitment to solar thermal. USA: First-Hand Information on US SHC Market

Conference LogosThe American Solar Heating & Cooling Alliance will offer sector-related conferences at both of its major upcoming events in the USA: Intersolar in San Francisco on 12 July and Solar Power International in Las Vegas on 12 September. The SHC Alliance, a division of the Solar Energy Industries Association, is organising and sponsoring these events to assess the tremendous impact solar thermal could have on energy and national gas consumption across the country. There is still little demand for solar thermal technologies and the industry will need to invest considerable effort in communicating their advantages. Gross additions in 2015 for glazed collectors have been estimated at 170,000 m² – a 7 % drop compared to the previous year. Unglazed collectors increased 1 % last year, bringing the total up to 846,000 m². These US market figures were provided by Les Nelson, a member of the SHC Council.
 

USA: Solar Hot Water System on Newest High-Rise in San Diego Central

CeladonUS-American company Adroit Solar is currently installing a solar hot water system on the newest high-rise in the city centre of San Diego. The 17-storey building called Celadon is scheduled to be completed in early 2015. The solar installation has been subsidised by the California Solar Initiative (CSI) and was one of 285 projects which had applied for subsidies under the category Multi-Family Residential - Low Income over the last 12 months. USA: More Incentives and Marketing in California

Demand for the California Solar Initiative (CSI) – Thermal Program is still below expectations. The second quarter of 2012 saw a mere 61 residential applications, as well as 40 applications for multi-family and commercial buildings submitted (see the attached report). Only the new section “multi-family houses for low-income families”, which was launched in March this year, had a good start and has already resulted in 67 applications in the second quarter of 2012. This is because the incentive level has been set to 150 % of the general programme’s incentive level.

Handbook for the Solar Water Heating Pilot Programme in California (2008)

The California Center for Sustainable Energy (CCSE) developed a Solar Water Heating Pilot Programme, following the launch of the California Solar Initiative (CSI) in 2006, intended to promote the greenhouse gas emissions reduction by lowering the usage of natural gas and electricity for water heating.
