The Value of Concentrating Solar Power and Thermal Energy Storage (2010)

Submitted by Raquel Ponte Costa on June 20, 2015

This is a technical paper written by the National Renewable Laboratory, a division of the US Department of Energy. The report looks at the value added by thermal energy storage to concentrating solar power in the southwestern United States. The analysis by the authors shows that thermal energy storage does add value to concentrated solar power in a number of ways. First, thermal energy storage allows a larger amount of thermal energy from a concentrated solar plant’s field to be used. Second, by giving the plant more room to allow a bigger solar field.

US Solar Thermal Market Outlook (2010)

Submitted by Raquel Ponte Costa on May 26, 2015

This presentation was created by Ed Murray and presented in conjunction with the California Solar Energy Industries Association (CSEIA) and the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA). It reports on the outlook for the domestic US solar thermal market in 2010. This would be a good document for anyone interested in comparing expected growth versus actualized growth in the solar thermal industry.

Utility Solar Water Heating Initiative and Energy Star (2011)

Submitted by Raquel Ponte Costa on April 7, 2015

This letter was written by Chip Bircher of USH2O, a solar thermal water heating industry group, to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). It answers questions that the EPA had regarding solar thermal water heating and its eligibility for the Energy Star Program.

USH2O makes the argument that solar thermal water heating should remain eligible for the Energy Star labeling program. Solar thermal sales have shown consistent growth, and so it is important to maintain the relationship as the use of solar thermal becomes more widespread.
