Austria: New Medium-Temperature Collectors Show Remarkable Yield in District Heating Use

Graz Test Field SOLIDDuring the last seven years, a group of scientists has monitored selected large solar thermal installations in Austria on behalf of the Austrian Climate and Energy Fund. The gathered data confirms that these plants have been reliable and produce satisfactory yields. Particularly the new generation of large-scale medium-temperature collectors either with a foil or with a second glass cover shows remarkable results in district heating use. The 2,490 m² solar field (see photo) which has fed heat into the district heating network of Graz, Austria, reached a yield of 489 kWh/m².

Smart Heat: Ruvi Solar Highlights Customer Experience

Studies by different consulting companies, such as PricewaterhouseCoopers and Oliver Wyman, agree that information technology will revolutionise the energy sector from the ground up. Along with the trend of “digitalisation” goes the one of “customer centricity”, which means putting the end users’ preferences and way of thinking in the focus of product design – just as has been done by providers of convenience products. The energy sector in general and solar thermal in particular have hardly pushed the issue into the public spotlight. Now the Austrian start-up ruvi created a new solution to monitor solar thermal systems. The company’s novel approach: Make solar thermal easily understandable without forcing the user to read a manual. 
 

Russia: Astrakhan’s Solar District Heating Plant

Russian InstallationIt is said to be the largest solar thermal plant in Russia: 2,200 collector modules by German heating boiler manufacturer Bosch Thermotechnik have been installed next to a district heating system in Narimanov in the Astrakhan region in southwest Russia. The district heating plant includes 5 new gas boilers from Bosch Thermotechnik with a total of 30 MW. The complete state-of-the-art heat supply unit – gas and solar – was financed by Astrakhan’s regional government. It was commissioned in October 2012 and inaugurated in June 2013 after a fairly short planning time. The existing district heating system with separate pipes for hot water and space heating provides heat for the 11,600 inhabitants of Narimanov. The 4,400 m² collector field feeds into the hot water pipe system.

Commonwealth Solar Hot Water Program Residential Performance Monitoring Interim Report (2012)

This report was created and published by the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC). It provides a preliminary analysis of the monitoring that had been done to judge the efficiency of select water heating systems which were installed under the Commonwealth Solar Hot Water Program.

France: Promising Monitoring Results of Solar-Cooling Hybrid Strategy

Hybrid Solar Cooling ConceptDuring the Task 48 meeting in Garching, Germany, at the end of September 2014, Daniel Mugnier, Head of Task 48 of the IEA Solar Heating and Cooling programme, presented the monitoring results of a promising demonstration project which integrates solar cooling technology into an existing building cluster. Engineered by Tecsol, the system has been supplying energy to two buildings housing offices and flats in Montpellier, in the south of France, since May 2012. The special characteristic of the system owned by the SERM (Société d’Équipement de la Région Montpelliéraine) is a hybrid mode in which the 240 m2 field with double-glazed collectors supplies heat to a single-effect lithium-bromide absorption chiller in summer, as well as domestic hot water to the block of flats all year round. During the main cooling season in July and August, the electrical coefficient of performance (COP) showed a very high average of 12, while the measured thermal COP during the same period was, on average, 0.6.

Germany: Hamburg’s Eight-Year Large-Scale Solar Thermal Monitoring

HamburgSince 2006, the Solarzentrum Hamburg (translated as Solar Centre Hamburg) has been in charge of monitoring the city’s large-scale solar thermal plants. In 2013, this monitoring programme covered 77 plants with a total aperture area of 6,612 m². In December 2015, Solarzentrum Hamburg’s centralised control will end, after monitoring the last batch of systems which started their two years in the programme by the end of 2013. The two attached presentations in German summarise the 2012 and 2013 monitoring results.

India: 27 Field Visits of Solar Process Heat Installations

SoPro IndiaIn cooperation with the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), the German Agency for International Cooperation, GIZ, organised a workshop in New Delhi in the middle of October to present the first findings and measures within SoPro lndia, a project which aims at analysing and optimising existing industrial solar heat installations. The German Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems, Fraunhofer ISE, and the Andhra Pradesh Industrial and Technical Consultancy Organisation (APITCO) showcased their results from the first year of research.
