Europe: The Way to a Shared SHIP Research and Innovation Agenda

INSHIPHuge potential but little implementation so far – this is how one could describe the global situation of Solar Heat for Industrial Processes (SHIP). Although experts acknowledge that process heat shows the greatest potential of all solar heating and cooling applications, the share of SHIP systems in total installed solar thermal capacity has remained below 1 %. To tackle some of the barriers, such as missing standardisation, system costs and reliability, the INSHIP project funded by EU Horizon 2020 was launched in early 2017. It aims to devise a European Common Research and Innovation Agenda (ECRIA) on SHIP within the next four years. The project is coordinated by the German Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE and involves 28 European research institutions from twelve countries.

Ruud KempenerThe International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) published two technology briefs last week. The 40-page documents, one entitled Solar Heat for Industrial Processes, the other Solar Heating and Cooling for Residential Applications, give a brief global overview of the market and technology development, including some recommendations for policy makers (see attached documents). It is the first time that the solar thermal sector is in the focus of a technology brief. The studies were published under the Energy Technology Systems Analysis Programme (ETSAP) of the International Energy Agency. Solarthermalworld.org spoke with one of the authors, Ruud Kempener, Technology Roadmap Analyst at the IRENA Innovation and Technology Centre in Bonn, Germany.

The author of this Solar Heat for Industrial Processes Project is Professor Roland Winston, Director of the Advanced Solar Technologies Institute at the University of California Merced.

Worldwide: Initiators of Solar Process Heat Database Look to Add More Reference Projects

data baseThe middle of March saw the launch of the online database www.ship-plants.info, which has so far collected 122 projects using Solar Heat for Industrial Processes (SHIP). The database was created in the frame of Task 49/IV of the Solar Heating and Cooling Programme by the International Energy Agency. The energy output of the database’s 122 solar process heat plants from around the world adds up to 87.8 MW, which is equal to 125,600 m2 of collector area. Solar process heat engineers, planners, system integrators and energy service companies are all welcome to add reference projects to the online platform. 
 

Solar Heat for Industrital Process Technical Report. State of the Art in the Mediterranean Region

The objective of this technical report is to provide an overview of the state of the art of Solar Heat for Industrial Processes (SHIP), to describe the main technologies existing worldwide, particularly in the Mediterranean, and give recommendations aimed at supporting the spread of this technology. Although there is a very limited penetration of solar technologies in the industrial sector, there is a great untapped potential.
