CBENS to discuss solar heat for industry

CBENS 2018Brazil’s solar energy association ABENS has invited about 500 experts to the solar energy conference CBENS taking place from 17 to 20 April 2018 in Gramado. This year’s event, held in the south of the country, offers a round-table discussion about solar heat for industrial processes, or SHIP for short, to raise awareness among technicians, researchers and future professionals of a technology that many in Brazil know little about.

Brazil: Promising SHIP Case Studies in Pernambuco State

Solar Heat for Industrial Processes (SHIP) is taking its first steps on the Brazilian market. Considering the mere handful of SHIP plants in operation in a country as huge as this one, the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) is contemplating SHIP support measures as part of its long-term project Concentrating Solar Power in Brazil (2013 – 2017). There have been feasibility studies on SHIP plants in the north-eastern states of Pernambuco and Ceara and the first online training course on solar process heat in March 2017 attracted 80 participants from across the country. 

Brazil: 2016 Market Statistics by Newly Founded Industry Association ABRASOL

Brazil Market Development 2016A recently introduced annual statistic by Brazil’s newly established industry association ABRASOL based in São Paulo shows that in 2016, the country was again the one with the third-largest number of new installations and the largest solar thermal market in South America. The 1,304,922 m² of newly installed glazed and unglazed water collector area (0.91 GWth) added in 2016 have put it only slightly ahead of India and behind China and Turkey. Brazil’s glazed collector market experienced a comparatively small drop of 4 % considering the country’s ongoing economic and political crisis and the slowdown of Minha Casa Minha Vida (My house, My Life), the programme which had made solar water heaters a requirement for new social housing projects. Reduced purchasing power led to a 10 % decline in the sales of unglazed collectors for swimming pools and vacuum tube collectors played only a minor role last year, garnering 2 % of sales.

Worldmap Process HeatIndustrial solar heat is far from being a standard yet, but it is more widespread than you might think. The first World Map of Solar Process Heat Specialists shows 71 companies in 22 countries which reported almost 400 reference systems. Together with additional plants included in the online portal, the world market for industrial process heat comprises at a minimum 525 plants with an collector or mirror area of at least 416,414 m².

Solar Payback: Three-year Support Project for Solar Process Heat Launched in India

Solar Payback GroupThe Solar Thermal Federation of India (STFI) and the Indo-German Chamber of Commerce (IGCC) have teamed up for the international Solar Payback project, which aims to increase the use of solar thermal energy in industrial processes. The photo shows the partners during the Kick-Off Meeting in Mumbai, India, on 16 December 2016. Supported by the German Federal Environment Ministry funded by the International Climate Initiative, the three-year project will be implemented in India, South Africa, Mexico and Brazil. It is coordinated by the German Solar Association BSW-Solar and eleven partner organisations: three German companies, plus each target country’s national solar industry association and German chamber of commerce.

Global view: Solar Thermal Markets Transitioning from Residential to Commercial

TransitionChange is coming to the world’s solar thermal markets: Single-family homes – currently the most important sales segment – are going to lose their significance in the future. Most solar thermal manufacturers across the globe predict their sales to be dominated by other segments over the coming years. These are just some of the results from international survey ISOL Navigator December 2014, a study published by German agency solrico. 365 solar collector manufacturers and solar thermal system suppliers from all corners of the globe participated in the survey. The figures in brackets show the number of questionnaires which were included in calculating the regional averages.

“Very few countries have policies explicitly supporting renewable deployment in the industry sector”

Ruud KempenerThe International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) published two technology briefs last week. The 40-page documents, one entitled Solar Heat for Industrial Processes, the other Solar Heating and Cooling for Residential Applications, give a brief global overview of the market and technology development, including some recommendations for policy makers (see attached documents). It is the first time that the solar thermal sector is in the focus of a technology brief. The studies were published under the Energy Technology Systems Analysis Programme (ETSAP) of the International Energy Agency. spoke with one of the authors, Ruud Kempener, Technology Roadmap Analyst at the IRENA Innovation and Technology Centre in Bonn, Germany.

REN 21: Solar Thermal Contributes Significantly to Hot Water Production

top ten 2012According to REN21’s Renewables 2014 Global Status Report, which was published at the UN-hosted Sustainable Energy for All Forum in New York at the beginning of June, solar thermal technologies contribute significantly to hot water production in many countries and increasingly to space heating and cooling, as well as industrial processes. REN21 is a global multi-stakeholder network for renewable energy policy, connecting key actors from governments, international organisations, industry associations, science and academia, as well as civil society. First released in 2005, the report provides a comprehensive and timely overview of renewable energy markets, industries, investments and policy developments worldwide. The renewable energy data is provided by an international network of more than 500 contributors, researchers and authors. According to report data, the world added 55.4 GWth (more than 79 million m2) of solar heat capacity in 2012, increasing the cumulative installed capacity of all collector types in operation by over 14 % for a year-end total of 283.4 GWth. The chart above shows the shares in global capacity in operation across 2012’s top ten countries.

Brazil: Solar-preheated Water for Factory Canteen of Aircraft Producer Embraer

Bosch Thermotechnology is planning to expand its business in Brazil’s commercial segment. The German boiler manufacturer, which has also been producing collectors and solar tanks for decades in Germany, has just inaugurated a new solar thermal installation at Embraer in São José dos Campos in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Embraer, a well-known aircraft manufacturer, has had 180 collector panels with 427 m² installed on the flat roof of the kitchen building, together with four tanks of 4,000 litres each. The building includes a restaurant serving 10,000 meals per day in three shifts. The installation is part of the Solar Roof Programme coordinated by the German Energy Agency, dena, which realises showcase projects in potential export markets for solar thermal manufacturers. The project covers the solar system, its installation, several training and marketing measures and the administration by dena. 45 % of the costs are covered by subsidies from the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology. Industry partners Bosch Thermotechnology and Embraer contribute the remaining 55%.
