Quality Infrastructure Crucial to Emerging Markets

IRENA 2In December 2015, the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) published a comprehensive report on how to establish a quality infrastructure (QI) for solar water heaters on small-scale markets (see the attached document). The 76-page study is part of a series on Quality Infrastructure for Renewable Energy, which uses information from 83 survey respondents and data from interviews with 34 experts on QIs for renewable energy sources. The report discusses established international system and collector testing standards as well as examples of implementation across selected countries. It also highlights market barriers and makes recommendations for developing solar water heater Qis, focusing mainly on emerging markets. The programme highlights the complexity of a quality infrastructure, including the establishment of a product label, test labs, installers’ certification and the involvement of inspection bodies.

The History and Development of Barbados’ Solar Hot Water Industry (2012)

This presentation was created and published by the solar energy company Solar Dynamics. It provides information on the beginnings and growth of the solar thermal water heating industry in Barbados.

Solar thermal water heating in Barbados has its origins in the 1960s, but did not really start to take off until the oil crises of the 1970s. Since then, the solar thermal industry in Barbados has seen steady growth, especially when compared to other countries.

REN 21: Solar Thermal Contributes Significantly to Hot Water Production

top ten 2012According to REN21’s Renewables 2014 Global Status Report, which was published at the UN-hosted Sustainable Energy for All Forum in New York at the beginning of June, solar thermal technologies contribute significantly to hot water production in many countries and increasingly to space heating and cooling, as well as industrial processes. REN21 is a global multi-stakeholder network for renewable energy policy, connecting key actors from governments, international organisations, industry associations, science and academia, as well as civil society. First released in 2005, the report provides a comprehensive and timely overview of renewable energy markets, industries, investments and policy developments worldwide. The renewable energy data is provided by an international network of more than 500 contributors, researchers and authors. According to report data, the world added 55.4 GWth (more than 79 million m2) of solar heat capacity in 2012, increasing the cumulative installed capacity of all collector types in operation by over 14 % for a year-end total of 283.4 GWth. The chart above shows the shares in global capacity in operation across 2012’s top ten countries.

Mexico: Workshop on Quality Assurance for Solar Water Heaters

A comprehensive documentation of the workshop “Quality Assurance for Solar Water Heaters: Tasks for the Quality Infrastructure” is now available online on the webpage of the German federal agency PTB (Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt): https://www.ptb.de/lac/?id=5860 You can download all the presentations there. The four-day workshop attracted 70 experts from the solar heating and cooling sector, as well as from service providers in Latin America and the Caribbean, who met in Mexico City at the end of September to discuss the current challenges and shortcomings with regard to the quality of solar water heaters in the region. The workshop was part of the regional project “Quality Infrastructure Services for Renewable Energies and Energy Efficiency in Latin America and the Caribbean”.

Solar Water Heating Regional Market Assessment Report on Latin America

This regional market assessment report focuses on six countries: Argentina, Barbados, Brazil, Colombia, Nicaragua and Peru.

After analysing the solar water heating (SWH) market status (demand, supply, costs and economic and financial incentives) in the respective countries, this report gives a detailed account of the political and institutional framework for the SWH market. It subsequently offers an analysis of the gaps and barriers in each country, alongside a set of suggestions that would improve present conditions.

Chile: Solar Energy Workshop for Latin America and the Caribbean

Abdel Hai, Programme Officer for the Energy Branch of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) (left), and Eduardo Noboa, Renewable Energy and Environment Coordinator from the Latin American Energy Organisation (OLADE), organised a two-day workshop with the aim to strengthen the solar water heating markets in Latin America and the Caribbean. A total of 46 solar thermal experts from several countries (Argentina, Barbados, Brazil, Ecuador, Chile, Colombia, Nicaragua, Mexico, Peru, Uruguay) exchanged information, knowledge, lessons learned and successful experiences.

Bailey, a clever business man from California, started producing solar water heaters in his company Day and Night Solar Heater Co. exactly 100 years ago. The technology was based on Bailey´s own patent, which was approved on 2 August 1910.

The Financial Benefits of Solar Hot Water Systems to Barbados (2010)

This presentation, brought by the Barbadian company Solar Dynamics Barbados, touches upon the success story of Barbados and solar water heating installations.

Two important factors explain this success: the government's recognition of the need and the benefits of going solar and the fast development of the industry at a time of rapidly rising electricity and energy costs.

The presentation goes through the evolution verified, the support schemes that were created together with other measures leading to such a remarkable success of solar thermal in Barbados.
