MENA: First Online Training Program on Solar Water Heaters Certification

Submitted by Baerbel Epp on June 21, 2015
SHAMCI TrainingIn March, the Regional Center for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (RCREEE) launched an online training program on the Solar Water Heaters (SWHs) Quality Assurance and Certification Scheme in the Arab region. The training course aims to provide participants with sufficient knowledge on SWH quality and certification schemes, such as the Solar Heating Arab Mark and Certification Initiative (SHAMCI). Participants can register for the training course online. According to the RCREEE, it is the first online training in the Middle East and North Africa region. The implementation of the course was supported by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

Thermal Desalination Driven by an Innovative Salinity Gradient Solar Pond Located in the Coastal Waters of Open Seas (2015)

Submitted by Francesco Gattiglio on April 10, 2015

This presentation, prepared by Dr. Ir. Ing. Dick G. Klaren of Klaren International, proposes the use of a salinity gradient solar pond (SGSP) in coastal waters as renewable energy source for thermal desalination. The document was presented at the CWC Technical Seminars featured at the Saudi Water & Power Forum (SWPF), held between 12 and 14 January in Riyadh, in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Solar thermal polygeneration system for cooling, fresh water and domestic hot water supply: Experimental analysis (2014)

Submitted by Francesco Gattiglio on April 1, 2015

In this paper, presented at the World Renewable Energy Congress of London of 3-8 August 2014, a solar-thermal poly-generation system for chilled water for air conditioning using absorption chiller, pure water with membrane distiller and domestic hot water by heat recovery is presented.

Middle East and North Africa Region Assessment of the Local Manufacturing Potential for Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) Projects

Submitted by Raquel Ponte Costa on April 11, 2012

Commissioned by the World Bank and carried out by Ernst and Young and the Fraunhofer Institute, this report assesses the local manufacturing potential for Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) components in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.

Solar Cooling Market to experience big Changes

Submitted by Baerbel Epp on July 18, 2011

Uli Jakob” According to Dr Uli Jakob, Vice President of the “Green Chiller - Association for Sorption Cooling”, the solar cooling sector may soon experience a shift from small series production of a niche market to considerable manufacturing quantities. Jakob points out two signs supporting such a development: First, the approval of the IEA-SHC task 48, “Quality Assurance and Support Measures for Solar Cooling“; second, the recent market entry of big players, such as Stiebel Eltron (Germany) and Hitachi (Japan).
