New Report on Heat Rejection Systems for Solar Cooling (2015)

This report presents an overview of existing and novel concepts for heat rejection devices in solar cooling systems and recommends which heat rejection measures should be used under different boundary conditions (climate, system concept, etc.). Several components include a performance characterization that was prepared in partnership with manufacturers.

Europe: Performance and Cost Comparisons of Larger Residential Solar Thermal Systems

As solar thermal installations have been a rare sight at Germany’s multi-family houses, the country’s Institute of New Energy Systems (InES) at the University of Applied Sciences in Ingolstadt took a closer look at Europe’s currently available larger solar thermal systems for domestic hot water and space heating. Daniel Beckenbauer, researcher at InES, counted 29 German collector installations above 100 m², as well as 47 systems in other European countries by surveying existing literature, web-based monitoring and other research programmes. Beckenbauer chose parameters such as solar share, investment costs and solar heat prices to compare these systems and to analyse the system designs offered on the market today. The chart above shows the monitored solar share based on the system’s specific storage volume. Because there are great differences in this volume between the surveyed projects, the x-axis has been divided logarithmically, spreading from 0.01 litre per MWh consumed heat per year (1E-05) to 100 m³ per MWh annually (1E+02).

POLYSOL Report Summary (2014)

POLYSOL is an EU-funded project, which started in 2011 under the 7th Framework Programme for Research for SME’s, with the aim to develop a modular all-polymer solar thermal collector for domestic hot water preparation and space heating which could be an alternative to conventional metallic collectors.    This report summarizes the work carried out over the first nine months of the project, provides technical information and shares the results of the various simulation studies.  These results show that polymer collectors can compete with the traditional metallic collectors.

Europe: Online Database on Large-Scale Solar Heating Plants

District Heating per CountryThe database on Europe’s largest solar heating plants, which can be found on the EU project SDHplus website, dates back to 1997. In the meantime, it has grown to 131 solar heating plants totalling a collector area of 586,000 m² (410 MWth). The first plants included in the database were installed in 1979. 124 of 131 systems are solar heating plants, most of them for district heating (particularly those in Denmark, Sweden, Germany, Austria, Poland and France), but also for large buildings, industrial use and other applications, whereas seven are cooling installations. The database contains "close to 100 % of all plants which have a minimum thermal output of 700 kW and started operating until the end of 2013,” says Jan-Olof Dalenbäck from the Chalmers University of Technology, who is in charge of updating the database as part of the SDHplus project. Eleven of these systems, with a joint output of 22 MW, have been shut down by now. The pie chart shows the installed collector area of district heating systems broken down by country.

Solar Thermal and Concentrated Solar Power Barometer (2014)

This report published by the French organization EurObserv’ER provides an overview of the Solar Thermal and Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) markets in Europe in 2013.  The first section of the report is dedicated to CSP. After analyzing the global and European markets, the barometer focuses on the development of the CSP technologies in Spain, Italy and France.  The second part covers the solar thermal market.  The barometer explains that for the 5th year in a row the European solar thermal sector is facing a slowdown. In 2013, the market decreased by 13.2% compared to 2012.

REN 21: Solar Thermal Contributes Significantly to Hot Water Production

top ten 2012According to REN21’s Renewables 2014 Global Status Report, which was published at the UN-hosted Sustainable Energy for All Forum in New York at the beginning of June, solar thermal technologies contribute significantly to hot water production in many countries and increasingly to space heating and cooling, as well as industrial processes. REN21 is a global multi-stakeholder network for renewable energy policy, connecting key actors from governments, international organisations, industry associations, science and academia, as well as civil society. First released in 2005, the report provides a comprehensive and timely overview of renewable energy markets, industries, investments and policy developments worldwide. The renewable energy data is provided by an international network of more than 500 contributors, researchers and authors. According to report data, the world added 55.4 GWth (more than 79 million m2) of solar heat capacity in 2012, increasing the cumulative installed capacity of all collector types in operation by over 14 % for a year-end total of 283.4 GWth. The chart above shows the shares in global capacity in operation across 2012’s top ten countries.

Europe: 1.19 GW and 15,000 Jobs Lost Since Boom Year of 2008

ESTIF Europe TrendIt’s a disaster. There is not much more to say about the statistics of the solar thermal market in Europe. The newly installed capacity dropped again, this time by 11% compared to the previous year, down to 2.14 GWth (see the attached document).  All large markets were shrinking – even Poland and Denmark, whose market volume had grown significantly in 2012. According to the annual studies by the European Solar Thermal Industry Federation (ESTIF), the sector has lost 1.19 GWth (1.7 million m²) and around 15,000 jobs all across Europe since the boom year of 2008. The study is published once a year at Intersolar in June. Despite the dismal situation, ESTIF pointed out that the average growth rate was 7.6 % over the last 10 years (see the pink line in the chart).

Europe: 10 Years of Solar Keymark – 1,600 Collector and 220 System Certificates

Solar Keymark statisticAt the beginning of June, the European Solar Thermal Industry Federation celebrated the 10th anniversary of Solar Keymark at its Intersolar Europe booth in Munich, Germany. Solar Keymark is a well-established certification scheme and label all across Europe and has been viewed as an exemplary model by countries and regions outside Europe as well. Today, there are around 1,600 different certified collectors and about 220 solar thermal systems, all listed in an online database. The chart shows the countries with the highest number of certificates for locally produced or locally offered collectors. China ranks third with 162 Solar Keymark collectors, after Germany (425) and Austria (211). 16 % of the collectors come from outside the 28 EU countries and Switzerland.
