The Solar heat resource is dependent in the first instance on the insolation falling on the surface of Ireland. The usable power generated by solar panels will vary depending on latitude, time of year and weather conditions. According to the European Solar Thermal Industry Federation, current technology produces per square metre of solar panel between 300 and 450 thermal kWh/year. The resource area is based on the roof area of existing and future dwellings.
This proposal, prepared by Professor Dr. Ursula Eicker at the University of Applied Science Stuttgart in Germany, is set to establish Europe as the leading producer of solar thermal cooling technologies. It describes what the main focuses of the research effort are, like optimisation to replace electrically driven compressor technology, for example. The proposal describes the need for solar assisted cooling and assures that it contributes to priority thematic area of Framework 6 and the European Research Area.

This report published by the French organization EurObserv’ER provides an overview of the Solar Thermal and Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) markets in Europe in 2013. The first section of the report is dedicated to CSP. After analyzing the global and European markets, the barometer focuses on the development of the CSP technologies in Spain, Italy and France. The second part covers the solar thermal market. The barometer explains that for the 5th year in a row the European solar thermal sector is facing a slowdown. In 2013, the market decreased by 13.2% compared to 2012.

This document from 2007, released by the European Commission, refers projects, financed under the 6th EU Research Framework Programme (FP6), to boost the use of solar power technologies in Europe, as a part of the EU’s goal of achieving 20% share of renewable energies inits overall energy consumption by 2020 and a minimum 10% share of biofuels in overall EU transport petrol and diesel consumption by 2020. Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) is a clean energy that can help the EU to meet this 20% goal.
